Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) are renowned Institutions for their excellence in the field of engineering and technology education in India. This Institution was established with the vision Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru wanted to nurture brilliant minds and promoted scientific research and technological innovation in India. IIT education in India was conceptualized in 1947, after the country’s independence, by Sh. N.M. Sircar, then a member of Education on Viceroy’s Executive Council.
IIT’s premier institution was inspired by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the United States.
The Indian Government has aimed to promote the IIT Institute established in India for advanced Technical education and contribution to nation-building by the Institutes of Technology Act of 1961. IITs are “Institutions of National Importance, which are declared the Top Engineering Colleges in India. To get admission to these Premier institutions, students have to clear the competitive exam, i.e., the IIT (JEE Advanced). After all, there are numbers of seats available in all the IITs put together, which is around 16,053.
As per the MHRD announcement National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) ranking for 2023 engineering, IITs are placed in the top 10 engineering colleges in India. The first IIT institute was Founded in 1950 at IIT Kharagpur in the Paschim Medinipur district of West Bengal, India; consequently, Several others were established in different regions across the country.
